Three Ways to Celebrate Pi Day with Venison Pie

Do you know the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet? If you’ve studied geometry or worked with circles and measurements, you’re probably familiar with 3.14 or Pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. That figure is critical to many mathematical equations, and it even has its own day, March 14.

As bowhunters, we think it’s appropriate to celebrate Pi Day with a pie of another sort: venison pie. We teamed up with’s “Timber 2 Table” blogger Michael Pendley to bring you some delectable venison pies. After all, what better way to celebrate a successful bowhunt than by enjoying a meal prepared from meat you harvested yourself?

While the oven pre-heats, let’s learn why venison pies are so great.

For starters, meat pies generally use ground venison from cuts less desirable than steaks and roasts. Pendley says grinding venison into burger is a good way to use every bit of a deer’s meat. In addition, meat pies are a great way to feed a crowd. And if some people at the table aren’t big fans of eating wild game, they might change their mind after sampling a meat pie.

“Pies are a great way to introduce folks to venison,” Pendley said. “There is something about mixing the meat into a dish like a pie that seems to make it easier for people to try venison, even when they won’t eat it by itself.”

Below are three of Pendley’s best venison-pie recipes. Each sounds delicious, so deciding which one to make first won’t be easy.

Loaded Mashed Potato Venison Shepherd’s Pie

With only a few days separating Pi Day from St. Patrick’s Day, it seemed fitting to kick things off with an old Irish favorite, shepherd’s pie. This version has an American twist, which adds cheese and bacon.

Venison Tamale Pie

Spice things up with this take on a Mexican favorite. “This easy-to-make venison tamale pie features all the traditional tamale flavor without all the work,” Pendley said. The dish calls for 2 pounds of ground venison and features a corn-filled masa crust.

Venison Cheeseburger Pie

If you like bacon cheeseburgers, you’ll love this venison bacon cheeseburger pie. Add jalapenos to kick it up a notch, and serve with traditional burger toppings like pickles, tomatoes and onions. Photo Credit: Michael Pendley

Who doesn’t love a good cheeseburger? This venison pie delivers just that without even firing up the grill. Along with 2 pounds of ground venison, this recipe calls for bacon and jalapenos (optional), if you like burgers with a little kick. “If you have leftovers, the venison cheeseburger pie reheats well the next day,” Pendley said.

Whether you’re a self-proclaimed math nerd or it’s been years since you’ve opened a geometry book, we can all agree that Pi Day is worth celebrating when venison and bowhunting are in the equation.
